Running with Bill Perkins

Back Top Forward

Bill Perkins is a runner I encounter about twice a week at Bally's. In recent years he usually qualifies for Boston, so in Running Through the Millennium I refer him as Boston Bill.

I've known Bill since before I ran my first marathon, so he's witnessed my struggles on The Road that Never Ends (the Bally's track) in person. He thought I had totally lost my mind when I did a 50K training run on the track, and was certain of it when I told him early last year it was my determination to run Across the Years.

He offered to come out and keep me company for a while as I ran, partly to see for himself if I would really do it, and I was grateful for the support. Bill had already run ten miles that morning before he got there, and ran with me until I reached ten miles.

We ran at a pace that was probably a hair brisker than I might have if I had been alone. This turned out to be a very good thing. By the time Bill left I had fallen into a very good rhythm, and felt completely energized, ready to continue running for many hours. That's a good thing, because that's exactly what I had to do.
