This shot is immediately across the street from the previous
two. It's a dangerous place to run. Notice there is no shoulder
at all to the right of the white line. It's not all this bad,
but many parts along here are even worse.
The police request that runners run on the right side of the
road, with traffic rather than toward it. For
most of this segment of two miles or more it's not possible or
advisable to run to the right of the white line. There are no
traffic cones (there would be no room for any), there is no
police support here, and traffic continues unhindered in both
directions. Runners must depend on the good-heartedness of
drivers to avoid getting bumped off. It's sort of a drivers'
honor system.
By the time runners arrive here on the return trip, they have
run over 23 miles of a difficult marathon, and many are
staggering. Most arrive after 9:00 AM, some as late as after
11:00 AM, so Saturday morning traffic is in full flow. There is
every possibility that a wobbly runner could misstep, hit the
jagged edge of the road, trip, and take a tumble, possibly into
traffic coming up from behind.
Recently I heard that they may be changing the course next year
because of this. It would be a good idea.
