A few seconds later I walked around to the front and took the first good picture of the new chute arrangement, with the timing canopy set up right next to it. This was a radical improvement over previous years, when the lap start was marked by a line across the track, and laps were counted either by hand or by volunteers typing lap data into computers.
Our loyal and proficient timer preferred not to be photographed. I took him at his word and therefore never did get a good shot of the computer equipment up close.
