The second page of buffalo bill's, a setting of the
E. E. Cummings poem by that name for soprano, alto saxophone,
guitar and piano. This piece represents a major break from my
previous work.
All three of the compositions I completed based on poetry were
on poems of e.e. cummings, a favorite of mine. Once I started a
concerto-like piece for piano and chamber orchestra with
contralto, where the vocal movement would have been based on a
James Joyce poem (Nightpiece), but I abandoned the
project because when I wrote to Joyce's publishers asking for
permission to use it, they wanted 50% on all future royalties. I
decided I didn't want to give it to them.
